[en] José Teruel is an architect. Ignasi Paré is a designer. Together they are Teruel-Paré, a studio of industrial and interior design dedicated to projects concerning furniture, lighting, accessories for the home and general accessories. Our collaboration with them began last year and the fruits of this work can now be seen in the new catalogue from Viefe® 2017-18 where there are different handles designed by their studio. We like what they do and how they do it. We wanted to find out a little bit more about them and that’s why we suggested this interview to which they gladly accepted.
What path has your studio work taken you in over the years?
We are industrial designers with very much in common, who met more than fifteen years ago on a 3D modelling course, from there we began to collaborate on project designs for different clients.
For which sectors do you design?
We offer services for industrial design, specializing in the furniture sector (office and home), lighting (interior and exterior), infrastructures (urban and for communities), accessories (industrial and home) and services for interior design, whether for commercial areas (shops and retail premises) or for mobile set ups such as stands at trade fairs and exhibitions.
Can you name some work that you are especially proud of?
Our designs for the Montseny collection of bedroom furniture for ASdara and the presentation stand for this particular collection ate the Valencia trade fair.
Is this your first time working in the world of knobs and handles? Tell us about your experience?
In fact, in the past, we have designed handles for other international companies and we have always enjoyed working with accessories that add a touch of personality to the home.
What steps do you take when you start to design a product?
First, after having been given the go ahead by the company, we jot down the exact design requirements from which we then elaborate some initial rough ideas which will then be developed until reaching a final design. Immediately after, we develop the technical side, looking at the geometrics and the materials and e then finish off by choosing the finish to the product and decide how we will get the idea of the product across to the customer.
What are your references?
We are both teachers at a school of design so for that reason our influences are strongly related to the history of design and modern and contemporary architecture.
A material
We can identify with any kind of material as long as it can express its own essence without trying to imitate other materials.
A shape
Whatever matches its function, whether that be practical or aesthetic.
A finish
We love the own unique finish of each material.
An interior design style that you like?
Those which adapt to the needs of the user without any superfluous elements.
Which is your favourite room in your house?
We believe that the kitchen is the place where good design is really appreciated, where each function has to be in exactly the right place.
Of all the designs that you’ve made for Viefe®, which of them really stands out for you? Why?
We are really proud of the Ona handle because of its smooth lines which integrate well with the piece of furniture.
