[en] Industrial designer Oriol Barri was the finalist in our first design competition that we organized in 2013. His idea fit perfectly with our style and since then he has been a design collaborator. He has created various designs of knobs and handles for us and we hope that he continues to do so for many years. We’ll get to know a little bit more about him and how he works from this interview.
Oriol, tell us a Little bit about the different sectors in which you work.
In the main, I am an interior designer, but due to the economic downturn and subsequent lack of work in this industry, and due to my previous experience in the jewelry design sector, I have been able to design products both for the furniture industry and the lighting industry.
How did you initially begin to collaborate with Viefe?
After having been finalist in their first design competition, we had a meeting, I found out a little about where they work and the history of the company and they then invited me to collaborate, always with a very informal yet close-knit way of doing things, something which has always appealed to me.
Describe the steps you take when designing a knob or handle.
The first thing I do is always to look at lots of images of many different things, which don’t necessarily have to be related to the world of handles or furniture.
Then I start to think about the particular type of space or furniture on which I will focus the design and I start to make the first draughts.
Finally, I match the drawings to standard sizes and measurements.
What inspires you?
Many things, images, cinema, music, different places…
A particular color
Any that combines well and in the right place.
A material
I’m very fond of Wood…but there are also materials, which have their origins in recycling that are also really interesting.
A shape
I’m really fond of simple shapes, whether straight or curved, but without any complications.
A type of interior design that you like
Talking about styles of interior design is complicated. In my opinion, the best styles are those which adapt best to the customer and not the most fashionable ones. For me interior design shouldn’t be based on simply creating a beautiful space, but rather adapting to its necessities in a harmonious way. When I was studying at university, one professor told us something that will always live with me: “The job of an interior designer is to make people live better and happier than before without them knowing exactly why”. In my opinion, this is good interior design.
Which is your favourite room in the house?
I live in flat which is just 38m2. Having a favourite room is therefore a slight problem; rather you could say that having one which I don’t like would be somewhat complicated.
Which is your favourite material out of all those you have designed with for Viefe? Why?
Without doubt that from the Conca and Plec collection because they’ve opened up a whole new field within the company as regards sliding doors. If I really had to choose between the two, then I’d choose Conca, firstly for the material and secondly for the smoothness of its lines.
